Musarrat Kalanchvi

Musarrat Kalanchvi is a prominent Pakistani writer, short-story author, playwright and literary figure associated with Saraiki literature. She has written in Saraiki, Urdu and Punjabi and is recognised for her contribution to modern Saraiki prose and drama.

Born in Bahawalpur in 1956, Musarrat Kalanchvi began writing at an early age. She has recalled that she wrote her first story while still in primary school. Her father, Prof. Dilshad Kalanchvi, was also a noted Saraiki scholar, critic and novelist, and encouraged her to write in Saraiki.

Kalanchvi became associated with Radio Pakistan Bahawalpur during its early years. She worked as an Assistant Producer and also contributed voice work and scripts for radio programmes. Her early involvement with broadcasting helped develop her work as a dramatist and storyteller.

She is regarded as one of the pioneers of the modern Saraiki short story and play. Her first Saraiki short-story collection, Uchi Dharti Jhukha Asman, was published in 1976. Her literary work has explored society, culture, language and the experiences of people in the Saraiki region.

Her writing extends beyond short stories. She has written plays, drama serials, non-fiction and works related to religious and literary subjects. Her work includes Saraiki short-story collections, a long story, Urdu plays, Punjabi and Saraiki drama serials, and books on Seerat.

Alongside her literary career, Kalanchvi pursued education and public service. She completed an MA in History from The Islamia University of Bahawalpur and joined the teaching profession. She later served as Principal of Government College for Women Gulshan Ravi in Lahore before retiring in 2016.

Kalanchvi has also contributed to the wider literary community through academic and cultural institutions. She has served on the Board of Studies in Saraiki at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur and has been associated with literary and cultural organisations.

Her contribution to Saraiki prose has received recognition through literary awards and honours. In 2024, she received the Presidential Award of Pride of Performance in recognition of her literary services.

Musarrat Kalanchvi's work represents an important part of the development of modern Saraiki prose. Through short stories, drama, non-fiction and literary engagement, she has contributed to the preservation and development of Saraiki language and literature.
