Mahmud Khan Gujjar

Mahmud Khan Gujjar was an 18th-century political and military figure who became the de facto ruler of Dera Ghazi Khan.

He rose to prominence in the service of the ruling chiefs of Dera Ghazi Khan and eventually became Wazir. Around 1738, he assumed control of the area and remained its dominant political authority until his death in 1772.

During his period of rule, Mahmud Khan was associated with the administration and development of the Dera Ghazi Khan region. Historical accounts credit him with establishing the settlement of Mahmud Kot and initiating canal works in the area.

His rule came during a period when Dera Ghazi Khan was governed through local chiefs and regional political authorities connected with the wider Afghan and Mughal political world.

Mahmud Khan Gujjar died in 1772. His period of leadership forms part of the early political history of Dera Ghazi Khan, before the region underwent further changes under Afghan, Sikh and later British rule.

His name remains preserved in the historical record of Dera Ghazi Khan and in the settlement of Mahmud Kot.
