Dr. Tahir Taunsvi

Dr. Tahir Taunsvi (1948–2019), whose real name was Hafeez-ur-Rehman Tahir, was a prominent Pakistani scholar, researcher, critic, poet and academic associated with Urdu and Saraiki literature.

He was born on 1 January 1948 in Taunsa Sharif, in present-day Dera Ghazi Khan district. He completed his early education in Taunsa and later studied at Government College Multan and Oriental College Lahore, where he pursued Urdu studies.

Taunsvi began his professional career as a lecturer in 1974 and later served in a number of academic and administrative positions, including Professor, Dean, Director and Chairman at educational institutions.

He pursued advanced research at the University of the Punjab and completed his PhD under the supervision of Dr Khwaja Muhammad Zakariya. His doctoral research focused on the life and literary achievements of the renowned scholar and critic Masood Hasan Rizvi Adeeb.

Taunsvi devoted much of his life to literary research and criticism. His scholarship covered Urdu literature as well as Saraiki literature and included criticism, textual research, biography, literary history, linguistics, culture, folklore, mysticism and comparative literary studies.

His connection with Saraiki literature was particularly significant. Academic research describes him as a representative voice in Saraiki literature whose work covered Faridiat, essays, short stories, novels, drama, travel writing, translation, linguistics, sociology, Islamic studies, culture, prose and poetry.

One of his important areas of scholarship was the study of Khwaja Ghulam Farid. His book Khwaja Ghulam Farid: Shakhsiyat aur Fan was published by the Pakistan Academy of Letters in 2007 and examined the poet's life and literary work.

Taunsvi also wrote extensively on major figures of Urdu literature. His research included books on Masood Hasan Rizvi Adeeb, Iqbal, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and other literary personalities. His research and editorial work helped introduce and document literary figures for later generations of readers and researchers.

His bibliography contains more than seventy books and hundreds of research articles. His publications include original research, literary criticism, compilations, biographies, poetry and edited works.

Alongside his academic work, Taunsvi participated actively in literary conferences and maintained correspondence with writers and scholars in Pakistan and abroad. His work connected different literary traditions while maintaining a strong relationship with the cultural and intellectual heritage of South Punjab.

Dr. Tahir Taunsvi died in 2019. He is remembered for his extensive contribution to literary research, criticism and scholarship, particularly in the study of Urdu literature and the Saraiki literary and cultural tradition.
