Aslam Rasoolpuri
Biography
Aslam Rasoolpuri was a prominent Pakistani Saraiki writer, literary critic, linguist, folklorist, researcher and lawyer. He devoted much of his life to the study, development and documentation of Saraiki language and literature.
Rasoolpuri was born in Rasoolpur in the Rajanpur region into a family with literary interests. His father, Abdul Hakeem, was also interested in Urdu and Saraiki literature. Rasoolpuri began writing at a young age and developed a lifelong interest in language, literature, history and society.
He initially worked as a teacher and continued his literary education alongside his professional life. He completed an MA in Urdu in 1971 and later studied law. In 1987, he left teaching and began practising as a lawyer.
His literary work covered a wide range of subjects, including Saraiki linguistics, literary criticism, folk culture, music, history, law and social issues. Dawn described him as a senior Saraiki writer, intellectual and critic with more than a dozen books to his credit.
Among his important works are Saraiki Adab Wich Mani Da Pandh, Saraiki Qaida, Saraiki Rasm-ul-Khat Ki Mukhtasar Tareekh, Saraiki Zaban Da Rasm-ul-Khat Atey Awazan, Saraiki Zaban Te Lasaniyat, Saraiki Tanqeed Te Ma Baad Nau Abadiyati Nazriya and Saraiki Lok Mausiqi.
His book Saraiki Lok Mausiqi examined the origins and development of Saraiki folk music, including folk singing and the traditions associated with Khwaja Ghulam Farid and Pathanay Khan. His work helped document aspects of the region's musical and literary heritage.
Rasoolpuri was also deeply involved in the study of Saraiki language and its writing system. He served on the Saraiki Script Committee and produced research on Saraiki orthography, phonetics and historical linguistics.
Beyond literature, he worked as a lawyer and was involved in human-rights activities. He also participated in cultural and literary organisations and worked to promote education, books and literary research in the Saraiki region.
His writing and research were used in academic settings, and his books contributed to the study of Saraiki language and literature. He was particularly recognised for combining literary criticism with linguistic and cultural research.
Aslam Rasoolpuri died in February 2024. Tributes following his death described him as an important Saraiki writer, intellectual, language activist and researcher whose work covered literature, music, language and cultural thought.
His legacy remains closely connected with the documentation and development of Saraiki language and literature. Through criticism, linguistic research, folklore studies and literary writing, he left an extensive body of work devoted to understanding and preserving the cultural heritage of the Saraiki region.
